Math Made Real Through Manipulatives

My Project

I teach gifted fifth graders, sixth grade math, which includes fractions, decimals, algebra and some geometry. These manipulatives will help my students better grasp math concepts by making them visible. Research has shown use of manipulatives and white boards in a cooperative setting improves not just learning, but retention (Building Thinking Classrooms).

Due to COVID, many of my students have both gaps from learning loss and, upon entering the gifted program, skip a full grade of math, having some procedural knowledge, but lacking conceptual understanding.

They desperately need help filling in those conceptual gaps that exist. I am implementing pedagogy from both Building Thinking Classrooms and Productive Struggle. These manipulatives and markers, will help my students physically work through concepts that can be difficult to grasp.
