I work with a diverse group of learners with varied interests. Each child has his or her own strengths and learning preferences. Some are hands-on, tactile learners, while others are more visual or auditory learners. They're excited about opportunities to try new things and use new tools. Some love working in groups or in pairs while others prefer working alone.
Every student in this classroom brings something to the table, and it's very rewarding to watch them help one another when they realize their own strengths.
Although they're still practicing these collaboration skills and working toward a more cooperative classroom environment, they know that there are times when they can lead in their own learning, and that they can help others do the same.
My Project
I was approached by a sixth-grade teacher about being "reading buddies," but there was one problem: the only time available was during math. The solution? Math literature. Students can engage in collaborative literacy activities with a mathematical twist.
The books for this project address topics such as place value, multiplication and division, fractions and geometry--all topics covered in our third-grade math curriculum.
It is my hope that by taking this different approach to math that students will see it in a new light--and improve their literacy skills in the process! Who wouldn't be delighted to learn geometry from the adventures of Sir Cumference, the brave knight?
