Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second grade students are second-language learners as well as energetic girls and boys looking forward to the new school year and building on all they learned in first grade!
In my second grade classroom, my students will be challenged to become better readers, writers, and MATHEMATICIANS!
Being that our school is located in a lower socioeconomic area and that all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, our student population doesn't always have access to quality literature outside of school. It is my desire that they have time every day to engage with books that strengthen their learning.
My Project
Every day in our classroom we engage in conceptual understandings of math and these books will help with that work! Sometimes students choose to read books about math when they are done with their independent math work. Other times, I choose to read a book about math at the beginning of a math lesson or we might do some problem solving using a math literature book. In any case, I want my students to know that during our math block, we can use literature to deepen our understandings of mathematics.
Having these books in our classroom library will also allow my students to choose books that interest them.
We know reading improves comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.
I want my students to be able to choose from quality books in our classroom library so that they grow as readers AND mathematicians. This project will definitely help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
