Help me give my students learn about math through literacy, and extend with hands on activities. We will use books like Mouse Shapes to explore shapes, and then draw circles with an easy to use compass!
I am a new teacher at a new PreK only facility in the Durham Public Schools. DPS is expanding to a universal PreK program, our school will have a total of 144 students. Our school is comprised of students from a variety of backgrounds. Many of our students receive free and reduced lunches. My class includes 4 and 5 year olds, with 20% of my students receiving IEP services.
I want to be able to provide a rich academic and sensory experience for all of my students.
Through this project, I will be able to facilitate learning and exploration through hands-on experiences.
My Project
My students enjoy learning math concepts and exploring math materials. However I have a limited Math library. I know that my class loves story books, and using them to jump start a new math concept will quickly give my students a quick introduction to a new topic. This project includes books covering everything from shapes to number concepts to patterns.
By using Math books and Math tools, my students will have an oral account and a hands on learning experiences with everyday Math concepts.
Preschool students benefit greatly from a story introduction and even more by exploring materials to extend the idea introduced in the book!
