My students need name plates with a multiplication table for facts they do not know. Additionally, as a class we need math manipulatives that are magnetic. It will help me teach and help my students learn.

My Students
Students from the North Philly area. Mostly Black students and mostly low income. Mostly curious, but are apprehensive about math and science learning and instruction. My students are energetic, strong, possess multiple intelligences. Some goals for these students are: understanding ways of incorrect thinking, understanding a little about how the brain learns, creating a loving and cooperative environment, developing confidence in their math and science skills, and learning how they already do math and science in their everyday lives to survive.
My Project
These materials will make a difference because many of my students have expressed that they do not know all of their multiplication facts. Having those facts right at their desk will help them as we begin our unit on multiplying large numbers.
As far as the manipulatives, our first lesson begins with reviewing place value.
If we do not have these manipulatives, the students who are behind on place value (say at a second grade knowledge base), will struggle that much more. Students need a tactile way to connect to and toy with the concept of place value for it to truly sink in!
