My Students

My students have missed out on a greater part of their elementary school experience due to COVID (almost 2 years). This is my first year teaching and my room is Harry Potter and Star Wars themed (my kids LOVE that I am half Jedi, half wizard!). I teach Jedi Math-my Jedi’s train everyday within the rigor of California Common Core Curriculum. I do not yet have a class set of calculators, this would be very helpful for hands-on math activities.

My Project

Having use of calculators in a classroom is a great way for students to be able to visualize math operations they have already performed, to check work (perform inverse operations), and for hands-on activities. In secondary grades, calculators are not meant as a substitute for learned skills to perform math operations, but a tool that can be applied to see patterns quickly after learned skills are applied (converting fractions to decimals, powers of ten, etc.). When secondary students enter middle school, they should already understand the basics of operating a calculator within normal math operations.
