Every day, we engage in morning math routines. This includes a daily attendance activity as well as a routine called " The Counting Jar". As the year progresses, so do the daily math routines. These activities engage the kids and spark an inquiring mind.
I am a kindergarten teacher at a low income inner city school in Brooklyn.
Kindergarten kids are naturally curious about the world we live in and how it relates to math. They love to explore and problem solve while using manipulatives. This is how math in their world all adds up!
My Project
I am requesting math center activities and lots of manipulatives for the kids to use on a daily basis. These materials will be used in a hands-on approach to math. They will be able to explore, solve, discover and work independently on their math skills. They will learn how to connect math to their world and be given the opportunity to make it more concrete. It is much more valuable to be able to sort, count and classify by actually working with the manipulatives instead of just looking at a picture. Doing hands-on math also builds their problem solving skills by coming up with multiple solutions to a problem.
Children can indeed be mathematicians!
They can be lifelong problem solvers and think outside of the box! These math center activities and manipulatives will make their connection to math all add up!
