My Students

My students are special because they are uniquely talented and love learning...just not always math. They often ask the question, "When will I ever use this?" When Covid happened and we went online, my students persisted and still showed up "virtually" every day. Learning was a challenge for them as teachers were trying to navigate the complexities of moving everything online.

I've heard more students this year say, "I hate math!".

I contribute this to their online struggles with math. By being online, my students lost the opportunities of hands-on learning and real world applications which is key for math. They also lost the ability to work in small groups, play math games and scaffold off of one another. I want to change the way they think about math, that math can be fun!

My Project

Let's face it. Math is not always fun and then throw Covid-19 in the mix and math can be downright painful.

Math should be fun and relevant.

Using the requested resources, I want to achieve a couple different things in math. First, I want to make it fun and by doing so I need games. The Algebra Games by Didax will provide students an opportunity to practice more with linear, quadratic, conic Equations in a more fun and engaging way instead of through worksheets. Students need more practice in this area because they have a difficult time connecting equations, tables, and graphs. I want to create station rotations in my class where students can have one station a game station. For this, I have requested the following math games: Proof, Math for Love Prime Climb, Nertz Cards, Absolute Zero, Number Sleuths, and PEMDice Order of Operations. These games will increase students understanding of a variety of math concepts in an engaging manner and provide a needed "brain break".

Second, I want to make it relevant to the students and need real world math activities. Students are always asking questions about when they will ever use a certain math concept. I want students to apply what they learn in math and make connections on when they would use it. Therefore, I've requested the following activities: Hands-on Activities, When Math Matters, and Math for Real Life. I also want to use manipulatives and dry erase boards more frequently and the additional resources requested will achieve this.

Our test scores have dropped because of Covid. I want to use the resources to enhance my students understanding of abstract concepts and make math meaningful to them. By doing this, students will make connections between math and the real world and have fun learning.
