The pandemic has negatively impacted many students with great peril. My students are making every attempt to meet the challenges that accompany virtual learning. Many of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch due to their low social-economic status. Students are expected to model learning virtually as if they were in-person. Sometimes not having the tools they need creates an additional barrier to learning expectations.
A calculator can help students compensate for slower processing when math calculations are not being assessed. I've noticed many students do not have stand-alone calculators at home. While they do have access to a calculator via the computer/Chromebook they are using, it requires an additional level of processing to toggle between browsers and memorize numbers and operations for input.
Calculator skills needed for high school are introduced at the middle school level.
Having a calculator will allow students, who find basic math calculations difficult, to demonstrate an understanding of math concepts. As a result, this will increase teacher and student pacing.
