Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am from a high poverty area near the Mexican border. I teach 6th grade math and science and have about 50 kids a day in my class, most needing supplies on a regular basis. We have a very small school population which does not provide us with much funding.
Despite these challenges my students persevere!
They are wonderful 11 and 12 year olds that work very hard to achieve the high goals set forth for them. They come into me not loving math and struggling to find out where they fit. It is my job to provide the best environment I can for them. As a teacher you only want the best for your students and treat them as your own.
My Project
Flocabulary is an awesome hip hop based vocabulary building website that helps students learn important math concepts through song. It offers students not only a fun way to learn math, but checks for understanding with vocabulary games, quizzes, read/ response and a lyric lab for kids to make their own math jams. Flocabulary also provides students the same resources in all content areas as well as life skills to help as they develop into adolescents.
All students should be provided an organized, happy, colorful and safe learning environment with baskets, pocket charts and liners.
By helping with the organization of our room, students will feel more calm and safe knowing where everything is, thus reducing anxiety. Having a specific space for students to keep their notebooks, turn in papers in as well as basic supplies, is vital to the climate of the classroom. I may not be able to control what they experience at home, but it's my job to give them that consistency at school.
