Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I am asked where I teach, I always have the same response.... in the middle of an orchard. My little school is located in the middle of a small rural migrant community. My students come from migrant worker households, from immigrants looking for an education for their children, for a better life. I know that sounds like a cliche to many, but for these families it is real life. I am blessed to be a part of that journey.
While my students are disadvantaged, they have spirit!
We work to create a welcoming and rigorous school atmosphere. Students rise to high expectations, and we are always looking for better ways to help them achieve their goals. This can be difficult in a small school. Parents are not able to donate time and money to help fund the "extras" our students need. We often have to look outside our little community for donations. This help is invaluable to our students.
My Project
"I am not good at math" This is what I hear from my second graders everyday. It breaks my heart that by age 7 these students believe that they are simply unable to grab mathematical concepts.
The belief that they can't succeed in mathematics is their biggest obstacle!
I spend many hours trying to prove them wrong by making mathematics fun. Children learn through play, while they don't even know they are learning. Before you know it they have the concept and can begin to apply it to other learning.
Games such as the roll and solve math game, Math equivalency, decomposing numbers and missing numbers puzzle provide opportunities to actually play with the mathematics in a tangible way. The Brain Builders game will incorporate engineering and take what they have learned about number sense and transform it into real life applications.
With play, I can teach them a true understanding of number sense that will stay with them for a lifetime, changing the way they approach their learning and most importantly, change the way they see themselves and their own possibilities.
