Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse group of students that come from a variety of backgrounds. The school is a Title I school and many families struggle financially. Thanks to a grant, all of the students at the school receive free breakfast and lunch.
This school is unique in that it is a Dual Language school that teaches Spanish and English in a diverse, high poverty, immigrant community.
The students have strong personalities and bring so much to the classroom. I love teaching these students and learn so much from them every year.
My specific class is a split level group of 5th and 6th grade students. The students are very hard working and lively. Majority of students are bilingual, but many struggle with math. With the right tools, time and instruction all of these students can be successful in meeting the grade level expectations.
My Project
My students enter 5th and 6th grade with some major holes in their understanding of math. These skills are essential as they continue on in their learning into middle school, high school and beyond!
Math should be fun and not intimidating.
Many of my students enter the year and tell me that they love doing science experiments, or that they love the newest Dork Diaries book. However, when it comes to math, it becomes almost second nature for students to say, "I'm bad at math." I want to erase that negative mindset and instill a love of learning back into math class! I believe that math offers students skills that are necessary in becoming future problem solvers and critical thinkers.
