Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
You can help us to become life-long mathematical thinkers, by providing us with various hands-on math materials. We all remember practicing a skill over and over again, to gain mastery. That's what my first graders need...to practice math over and over again in a challenging, yet fun way!
My students are from a low income area of Massachusetts and many are learning English as a second language.
School is the place for them to come and gain the skills needed to become successful learners and master our state standards.
Many students enter first grade unable to count beyond twenty and without a true knowledge of number sense.
My Project
With the generosity of many donors, my students will have mathematical materials available to them, so that they CAN practice the necessary skills and build the foundation needed for later mathematical experiences. Some important concepts that need to be mastered are telling time to the hour and half-hour, naming and counting coin values, discovering place value and what it means, memorizing fact-families by practicing addition and subtraction every day!
Once students discover the FUN that mathematics can bring, they will become motivated and want to keep on learning.
My students need various math manipulatives that can be used independently and with small groups.
These items include, clocks, flashcards, place value blocks, addition and subtraction cards, and movable number lines. The materials can all be stored in cubbies that allow easy access and promote independence.
