Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students vary from grades 9th through 12th at a high school in Northern California. They qualify for Specialized Academic Instruction under the provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Their qualifying factors vary from Specific Learning Disability, Other Health Impairments, Emotional Disabilities, and/or Attention-Deficity / HyperActivity Disorder. Their needs vary so much and our current tools are very limited.
Our school's population consists of more than 70% of families living below the poverty line as well as a variety of English Learners.
My Project
I would like to provide an intervention curriculum for my Special Education students. Currently, we do not have any intervention program being implemented. Students are missing key abilities learned in earlier Math levels, and this prevents them from fully understanding the material in their Math 1 and 2 classes. PCI Ed's Algebra City covers 28 common gaps in student understanding.
Students with learning disabilities may not have a good mathematical foundation, and many of them suffer from learning disabilities such memory and processing disorders.
Math is a constant struggle for many of our Special Education students. Full funding of this project will give students access to intervention curriculum, which will allow them to review skills they have learned in the past. This program will also help refresh their memory and provide more practice so they can build more confidence which is essential for their current Math classes.
