My students need 100 Scholastic Math Magazines with current events relating to mathematics to motivate their interest in math topics & concepts through real-world application.
My students are wonderful, active learners in 8th grade. As teenagers, my students are constantly wondering when they will use our lessons in their future. Through Scholastic Math Magazine, students will begin to place the current lessons and mathematical concepts we cover in class to their future.
My students are 8th grade students ranging in ages from 13-15 years old.
Students are enrolled in the 8th grade Pre-Algebra or 9th grade Algebra course. My students are on the edge of really loving Math or having feelings of disgust when Math class rolls around. I believe my students want to enjoy Math but are unable to see its relevance to their interests. My students are hard workers who need a little motivation and encouragement that Math is applicable to real-world experiences and interests.
My Project
Through Scholastic Math, we hope to motivate students in the classroom with problems that reveal unexpected math facts, concepts, and ideas within the real-world. These problems, concepts, and ideas build conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts in a way that engages student interest by using topics in which the students are interested. By seeing how currently and previously learned math concepts are found and used within real-world scenarios and interests, students are more likely to be engaged within the daily classroom. Also through Scholastic Math, students will increase their math vocabulary and skill levels by teacher created differentiated lessons. These Scholastic Math lessons will also enhance the school's commitment to involving students in more STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) activities that help students see the real-world connections of the math concepts they are learning.
My plan begins with the 10 month subscription starting September of 2016 and lasting though June 2017.
Students would begin getting a monthly print subscription to the Scholastic Math magazine where they will see mathematical concepts in the real-world. These magazines would motivate students in the 8th grade Math classroom but also beyond. Students will be encouraged to love Math as they see how it relates to their interests and future dreams.
