My students have a passion to learn, and come from all walks of life. Some have challenges beyond their ability to fix, and others have support that is amazing. This makes for a complex teaching and learning experience, but we are all excited for the journey.
The diversity of the community, students and learning abilities contributes to the vast learning obstacles we face at our school.
However, whatever the circumstances may be, my students are eager to learn, and even more eager to participate in learning that will get them ready for the world outside of the classroom.
My Project
Sometimes math is hard to complete on a piece of paper, not to mention to compute in your mind especially when you do not understand how it works. Using math manipulatives provides students with the skills they need to not only comprehend what they are learning but apply what they are learning to real-world situations in a more engaging way.
By providing students math manipulatives, I will be able to help my students not only visualize what the math looks like, but also give them the opportunity to create it and understand it on a whole new level.
Math is a subject that needs to be taught in multiple ways. Using manipulatives offers more ways than the traditional paper pencil. Using manipulatives brings math to life and helps students see the problem then create another way to solve a problem using a higher depth of knowledge and metacognition.
