My students need math manipulatives to explore mathematics concepts! Magnetic building tiles, double-digit dice, and the math game "24" will inspire them to love math.
My students walk into the classroom wanting a sense of family and security. They desire a "learning community" in which they can be heard, encouraged, take risks and grow. They want to feel wanted and welcome. They thrive with hands-on activities and a sense of involvement and ownership. My students are a community of learners who can work together to accomplish great things!
Our school is a low income/high poverty campus.
Students face many trials and struggles. They often fear that they cannot succeed, especially in math. It is my job to inspire them. When their eyes light up and a smile crosses their face, success has happened.
My Project
Students learn by doing. If students can explore and create in math, they will learn the concepts necessary for a firm foundation in mathematics.
Manipulatives are important tools in helping students to think and reason in more meaningful ways.
Magnetic tiles will provide tools for my students to explore symmetry, surface area, and volume. They can create multiple 3-D shapes and discover the different nets and calculate the surface area and volume of each creation. Double-digit dice allow students to use hands-on equation building to solve linear equations. The game "24" is a favorite activity of my students to create multiple equations that will equal 24. This game allows them to be problem solvers and use higher level thinking skills.
When they know that math includes exploration, they enter the room wanting to learn and are no longer afraid of math.
