My wonderful, special needs learners live in a low-income, inner city neighborhood. All of them learn differently than their peers, and sometimes I find myself inventing materials to meet their needs.
Children with learning disabilities often struggle with counting, calendar, and place value concepts, and my students are no exception. Memorizing the months has taken almost two years for some. Place value knowledge is slowly building, and so many areas in math depend on this basic skill. Some children have no analog clocks, no calendar, or no one available to help them practice these essential skills at home.
A set of calendars to create will improve number writing, language, and sequencing skills (and make a nice gift to their families). Counting boxes and place value kits mean my 1st graders who struggle can work together without an adult giving constant feedback. Clean, new partitions will allow true assessment at my crowded Maths table, and small rewards for biweekly improvement will motivate learners.
These few simple items will have a positive impact on my special students. Every year my caseload changes, so every year I have different needs to meet. Your support of this project will make learning easier for many children!
