Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students have never been to the beach even though it is only 2 hours away. Their families struggle to meet their day-to-day financial needs, so there isn't much left for optional activities and adventures. Through AVID, I have been able to expose them to more of the wonderful things this world has to offer.
My students are future first generation college students who need guidance in order to optimize their potential.
They are capable greatness, but they don't believe in themselves as much as I believe in them, yet. My job is to help them discover it.
My Project
Part of the AVID program is collaboration to get them ready for the working world. They work in groups to help guide each other to solve their Point of Confusion. They do this through a presentation of what they are trying to solve, what they have tried, and where they have gotten stuck.
When they are presenting their higher level math problems on the board, they need the drawing tools to do so.
Graphing problems on the board has been a struggle because we don't have the appropriate presentation tools. The graph paper will allow them to accurately present their problem. The tools will allow them to work out the problem on the board as a group. The graphing calculators will also assist in this process. They cannot afford to each have a graphing calculator so providing one to each AVID classroom will give them access to this tool.
