Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a STEAM Marine Science Magnet and my students are from the neighborhood but also from 10's of miles away. The school is located just a few blocks from the beach and aquarium. Students learn about the ocean and it's inhabitants from first hand experiences from the various walking field trips we take. My students are curious and imaginative. They are also thoughtful and creative. They have been researching and engineering their own projects. One of my personal goals is to teach students about their direct impact on the oceans and Earth as a whole.
My Project
Some of my students have been excelling at math in many ways but others are not. They struggle with gripping how numbers work and especially regrouping numbers. I would love to diversify their learning by adding games. Students learn more and solidify their understandings when they are engaged and having fun. What better way to help them to do this than with games! When students play with games (and friends) their anxiety and resistance about math drops and they can absorb strategies and facts. If the classroom had a variety of games, students could apply their learning in different ways and again reinforce their learning.
