Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a math teacher at an elementary school in the South Bronx. I teach kindergarten through fifth grade. I am also an AIS (Academic Intervention Services) teacher for third and fourth grade students, which means that I teach those students most in need of academic intervention in math. I teach them math test-taking strategies and problem-solving skills.
My students are having a great deal of fun working in their small groups because they are able to express themselves better. They ask questions freely and honestly if they don't understand certain math problems. My students enjoy playing math games, and I've realized that students do learn by playing games. However, I don't have enough math games for all of my students to play. My students really need to work on their math skills, and I know that playing math games will help them to improve these skills.
For these reasons, I am requesting two kits of math games from ETA Cuisenaire. Each kit has ten games that cover the core skills taught in those grades-—from basic operations to place value to fractions. Packaged in a Treasure Chest Storage Tote, all games include instructions and can be played by two to four players.
Giving my students the opportunity to improve their math skills by playing math games will allow them to raise their test scores on their citywide and state math exams and help them to keep going in their education. Thank you for helping me help them.
