Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are typical for the Los Angeles area suburbs. Most are immigrants from Mexico/Central/South America or Armenia. Many did not have good formal education before entering school in the U.S.A. As a result, most are many grade levels behind in math. A majority are on free/reduced lunch programs, and more than 20% are classified as English learners (Many more have been re-classified) and more than 5% are Special Needs. Capturing and keeping attention with all the available distractions is a great challenge. After 1.3+ years of distance learning, there are many, many gaps in their math knowledge and number sense needs a big boost.
My Project
After over a year of on-line distance learning, my 8th graders need to build on their fact fluency and experience cooperative learning. During distance learning many of my students were not able to focus on math skills. At the middle school level, most kids do not have adults around them who can help, and the zoom meeting just were not enough. Further, middle school is a key tie for studnets to develop social skills, particularly for cooperative learning.
Target math and social skills at the same time!!
This set of math games accomplished both. The wide variety of games allows each student to choose a group/game they can be challenged in, yet still feel success. The students fill holes in both math learning and social skills at the same time. They can work as a team to build number sense and not sit at a computer!! The game/competition aspect captures their attention as board games come back into fashion.
