I teach a lively bunch of elementary school students with special needs. My students are thoughtful, kind, hilarious, and my motivation for getting up in the morning. Everyday, I learn something new about myself and the world around me, simply by being around my students. I've often said that they teach me more than I teach them.
Although my students are fabulous, they do have some challenges just like everyone else.
Many of my kiddos have challenges related to their sensory and communication needs. My students have lots of energy and love to bounce and wiggle. They also love to communicate their thoughts and feelings to myself and to their peers, but it is often very difficult for some of them to do so. Despite the challenges my students face, they somehow manage to keep smiling and progressing everyday. They are full of light and hope, and their motivation inspires me to be the best teacher that I can be.
My Project
The word "math" typically brings about sighs and frowns in my classroom. My students struggle quite a bit when it comes to adding, subtracting and mastering other mathematical concepts. Most of my students are on a first to second grade level in math and they become frustrated when they are unable to understand and master the concepts their same-aged peers can. For some of my kiddos, math is the most dreaded time of the day. I want to see what I can do to change that.
Like most kids, my students thrive when they are engaged.
These instant math centers contain so many fun activities and games that can be used to teach concepts that may seem uninteresting to my students at first. All of the games, materials and lesson templates are contained within the boxes, making set up easy and accessible. These centers are chock full of fun ideas that can be easily adapted and used to teach other skills. Every game can be adapted to meet the needs of my students, which is a big plus.
These instant centers will help my students see math time as fun time in my classroom! I'm so excited to see how these fun activities will help my students change their mindset about math.
