Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom has 24 curious four-year-olds who love getting their hands dirty and love coming to school to learn. The students in my classroom are dual language learners. Half of my students are native English speakers and half are native Spanish speakers. My students learn important language skills and work together to enrich their language skills. My students are focused on improving social-emotional skills and learning ABCs, letter sounds, and numbers (just to share a few). The student population at my school is 98% low income. For many of my students, coming to PK is their first time being away from home and their caregivers. Very few have been exposed to a daycare setting or even to play dates.
PK is the foundation of their school career, and students will only achieve if they have a positive learning environment.
My classroom is a safe place where students can feel accepted and respected and where learning is the main objective. A positive school climate affects all associated with the school including students, staff, parents and the community.
My Project
My students need interactive activities in our math center. We need counters, shapes, pattern beads, and numbers. We are also in need of resources to help them learn skills such as measuring capacity, length, and weight. Using math counters will help my students develop their fine motor skills and having the other math resources will increase their understanding of basic math concepts.
These resources will give my children the opportunity to learn about counting, sorting, graphing, and allow them to start developing problem-solving skills.
They will be able to take the concepts they learn in class and can apply them to the real world situations such as making sets. The basic skills they learn will build a foundation for all they have to learn in future grades.
