My school is a Title I school that sits in the heart of Washington, DC. I have a group of first grade students who are fun-loving, eager to learn new things, excited about school and love to read. My classroom would be considered a blend of cultural heritage and social needs. Many of my students have been in the US for less than two years. They inspire me every day to do my best to address their needs.
To meet their needs, we incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, alternative seating, and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!
My Project
Virtual learning has changed the field, but the best practices are the same. Young learners should be using concrete manipulatives at home to practice math concepts in virtual learning. Children should be learning from sitting positions and actively listening to peers.
One effective way we've found of motivating learners to want to participate at their best is monthly prize giveaways.
Using our social media space called Class Dojo, we reward learners who put forth the greatest amount of effort and are willing to learn from mistakes. We use positive models to help our students understand norms and expectations of the classroom so that we empasize the positive and create a responsive community of learners.
These great board games and activities will be perfect for the cold days at home. With donors' help, we can get them to our students' homes for screen-free family friendly edutainment!
