Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I school with a wide variety of languages, ethnicity and home-life situations. Our school is part of District Reference Group “H”, which is the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in.
A high percentage of the students who attend my school are on free and reduced lunch and struggle to have other basic needs met, as well.
I try not to let the lack of funding for resources be yet another obstacle for my students to have to overcome while in my classroom .
As the Math Intervention teacher here at the middle school, for 6th through 8th graders, there are a wide range of skills that need to be reinforced within one class. I have witnessed the great, many and wide ranging needs of all of my students. Most of my students need to get all that they can while in my room because they do not have the support system at home, for many different reasons, to help them reinforce what has been learned in school with homework help. What is most inspiring about these students is despite their circumstances, they are eager to learn and eager to succeed.
My Project
Help me give my math students the ability to work in an environment free of distraction. These noise cancelling headphones will help all the learners in my classroom succeed, particularly those with attention deficit disorder and learning difficulties. One of the biggest challenges my students face in the classroom is distraction with the various skills being taught to the different small groups I teach within one class. Very often my students are distracted because of the close proximity within our small room to the other math skills being reinforced with other small groups.
Within one class, there are various levels of math being taught.
The grade level of the students in each class is the same BUT the math skills vary, some by 4 or 5 grade levels, within one class. Many times, as I am working with one group, I see the other students covering their ears to try to tune me out so they can focus on their skills. It is very difficult for my students to concentrate on practicing multiplying fractions if I am doing a lesson on dividing decimals. This is the type of distraction I would love to eliminate for them.
The noise cancelling headphones I am requesting are to help my students remain focused on their own skill and do the very best they can. Not only do the headphones cancel out noise, but they can be used to play soft, soothing music while they practice their math facts in their journals. My students can also use them with our math computer resources while they are here at school, as, many of my students do not have computers at home. Here, they can practice at their own pace. The addition of these headphones to our class will surely help ALL of my students succeed!
