This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach kindergarten at a Title 1 school in North Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Most of my children come from low income homes and almost all of them lost their homes in the flood. My classroom was destroyed by the flooding of Baton Rouge. Unfortunately, I lost a majority of the supplies I purchased for the classroom. These supplies include technology, books, and furniture. My students have suffered and lost many things but they should not suffer with learning and should not lose an equipped classroom.
My Project
The Great Flood of Louisiana swept away teaching materials in my school. My kindergarten students do not have materials needed to gain, develop, and strengthen their math skills. The skills learned in kindergarten are the foundation for the students to build their knowledge on during their educational career. A strong foundation in math is based on number recognition, fluency, and mental math. Puzzles, rubrics cubes, pattern cards, and games are tools used to strengthen the skills in a fun way. Children should learn at a young age that learning is fun. Once a child learns this, he or she will want to always keep learning new material.
