Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are creative, inspiring, and need some new materials to work with to continue their learning. They are primarily Hispanic and come from a very low income area. Most of my students started speaking Spanish when they were younger and didn't start learning English until they started Kindergarten.

This makes learning a challenge at times.

Our school is a Title I school that has over 90% of our students receiving free lunch. The families at our school are required to volunteer at least 20 hours a year to help support the school.

My Project

Learning math fluently takes hands-on materials to enhance the students learning. When students are able to manipulate materials, they are more engaged in their lesson and they move their learning into their long-term memory. I would use this kit to work with students of all levels in 5th grade math. When I teach math, I try to limit my instruction to 15 minutes. Then we go into rotations including a small group to reteach the standard, games to enhance and engage student learning, and hands-on manipulatives so that students can learn by doing. These supplies would be used to reteach, enhance and engage students in math.
