This year I will have a class of 21 kindergarten students who are eager to learn and explore. The school where I teach is a Title I school. We have 100% of the student population receiving free breakfast and lunch each day. We also have a high population of students who are English Language Learners (ELL). Many of my students will not have had prior schooling. Kindergarten will be their first exposure to education.
It is important that I make their first year in school a positive one in order to instill a love of learning.
My Project
A Math Fluency Kit will help my kindergarten students build number sense. Building number sense will set students up for success in the grades that follow. This kit includes hands-on manipulatives, Math Talks, Number Strings, and a teacher guide. The Math Talks are used to pose math problems to students and allow them time to solve the problem and share their thinking. They encourage students to think on a deeper level and explain the strategies they use, while also comparing strategies that their peers use. These problems can be solved using multiple strategies. The Number Strings provide five related problems per day and are designed to teach specific strategies for solving the problems. These are a great activity to use at the beginning of a lesson.
This kit will support my students in learning how to subitize, count on and count back, use five and ten, use doubles, and get to ten.
These lessons can be incorporated into our whole group instruction as warm-ups and can also be used during small-group interventions. Setting the foundation for Number Sense in Kindergarten is important in order for my students to progress in developing their math skills.
