Help me give my students access to Daily Number talks and manipulatives that will help them access the math in each of our daily interactions. These kits are filled with pieces to help us get started!
Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple." A quote from Dr. Seuss that sums up the feelings most kids who don't have a strong foundation in math number sense feel.
In my classroom we start with what's working for many, might not be the perfect fit for you - so, let's figure it out together!
We have an amazing group of students who, although life at home may not be what a typical home looks like, they persevere each day and come back to school.
As we have researched why the intensity of our numbers in Tier 3 intervention levels has such high frequency, we have found that many of them did not start in our system, but have transferred in. With our transient population we often get kids who have been to 4-5 schools by the time they are in 3rd grade and we have many holes to fill in. Our staff is a dedicated group of individuals committed to making gains for all students that start at a foundational level and continue on for life in the area of mathematics.
My Project
We are requesting math materials such as number paths, rekenreks and number string pattern problem sets. These math resources, although they may seem simple, are the basis for a strong intervention program in number sense that we are implementing this year. Our K-2 group that needs these skills but in our past practice of the standards it was always a race to move on, leaving many behind.
We want to use these tools to enhance classroom learning, catch counting and cardinality problems as they arise and give students a foundation of numbers to stand on as they move up through the mathematics world.
The students will be using these tools daily; in their classrooms, in interventions and be available to our after-school tutoring program that uses a reteach and preteach model.
Their lives will be changed as they can manipulate tools in real time and practice using numbers sense tools.
