Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over 90% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. While 40% of our students are considered English language learners, Spanish is the home language of 90% of our students. Many of our students are struggling readers, but work hard to reach their reading and math goals during the school year.
The students are excited, engaged, curious, hard workers and are eager to become better readers and mathematicians.
During math, we are solving multi-step word problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and expressing our different methods for solving, while analyzing right and wrong answers.
My Project
Our mathematicians have been spending all year learning how to add, subtract, multiply & divide, focusing on problem solving and making their thinking visible!
To celebrate their hard work all year, we are hosting an 8-week math competition to show what our mathematicians have learned, culminating with math field day!
Each week, we will celebrate our math competition with prizes and rewards for the winning mathematicians. At the end of the math competition, we'll be hosting a math field day with hands-on activities for students to participate, including math relay races and games, using large dice, flash cards, hopscotch, bean bag and ring toss games!
