Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse group from working-class families who come to school to develop an openness to solve challenging problems and a love for reading. These students come from mobile homes, newly built houses, and apartment complexes. They work hard to master our learning goals.
My students are MATH CHAMPIONS - trained to question, dig for understanding, bravely try new and challenging things, and celebrate their learning day by day.
They are eager to learn something interesting; to ask and answer questions worth talking about.
My Project
During math time and small group rotations, my students will use the Three Corner and Unknown Quantities Flash cards and fraction tiles as practice stations. Students will keep track of their own progress towards knowing all multiplication facts to 12, and will work daily with friends to fill in their knowledge gaps.
Working with friends to practice math facts lightens what can become tedious and makes learning feel more like a game; this is how my students will learn - through play!
Fraction work will follow this same pattern: practice, play, solve together, and celebrate. Getting hands-on makes learning concrete and grounded (also fun).
