Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine you are in second grade and you are on your second or third school of your elementary career. Each school you go to has been different. The instruction, the content, the standards, all have been different. Can you imagine how many gaps in your learning you would have? Can you imagine how much of a struggle it would be to "catch-up" at each new school?
My students are bright stars on a cloudy night.
They have so much potential to light this world with their abilities. They want, more than anything, to be successful. Unfortunately, my students struggle with reality. Many don't have a consistent parent. Many have to worry about where they will sleep at night, who will be home when they get home and if they will have food for dinner. I work at a school where 87.8% of our students qualify for the free and reduced price lunch program. Over 3/4 of my 25 students come from homes where English is not the primary language. The odds are stacked against them. They need every possible advantage I can give them to help them be successful in mathematics, a lifelong need.
My Project
Math facts are the basis for every concept in math. Students are more successful when they have not only memorized their math facts but also understand how numbers can be split apart and put back together. By providing my students with the ETA Hand2Mind's Daily Math Fact Practice Kit, I will be equipped to provide my students with daily math fact practice that is direct, simple and easy to understand.
The repetitiveness of daily practice is the best way for students to become successful in understanding how to decompose numbers.
This can be overwhelming for students who don't have a strong math background. Daily work with numbers, practicing math facts, building and taking apart sets of objects, and manipulating equations will give students a strong number sense. This is what they need to become successful mathematicians, and that is what they will receive by the use of the daily practice kit.
