Five year olds learn with their hands. They are curious about everything and want to learn by touching, manipulating, and playing with objects. That is why I would like to have more manipulatives to enhance my teaching curriculum.
I teach Kindergarten in South Carolina.
My students are five and six years old. The students are a mix of gender, economic status, and race. My class contains students from America, Hispanic countries, and Asian countries. I have students who have traveled on planes and have beach houses, as well as, students who have never left their hometown. I also have mainstreamed special education students in my class. The one thing all my students have in common is a desire to learn about the world. They love school and they learn the most with fun, engaging lessons that include feeling and moving objects. I do not teach many lessons that include pencil and paper. I like my students to learn by doing.
My Project
In order for my students to learn by doing, they must have the materials. I am asking for resources that will help me teach a variety of math concepts over the course of this academic year with a hands-on approach. I will explain each of the resources in detail.
First, I am asking for a 100's chart. This will allow students to see all of the numbers 1-100 and allow them to visually see the patterns numbers make.
Second, I am asking for a fishing for numbers game. This will allow students to use magnetic fishing poles to grab numbers and match it to the fish in on their card.
Third, I am asking for probability spinners. This is for all of the home-made games I have made. Many games require spinning to land on a number. These spinners are heavy duty and will allow me to stop making home-made spinners that constantly break.
Lastly, I am asking for 3-D shape match ups. This puzzle allows students to match shapes and make the connection between the pictures. It is self correcting!
These materials will allow students to play and have fun while learning.
Students will learn so much more playing with manipulatives and actually doing activities then completing a worksheet. Your donation to my classroom impacts my students now and those to come allowing them to have fun while learning math!
