I am a New York City Department of Education elementary school teacher. I have been working with the Department of Education since 2003. My school is located in Boerum Hill Brooklyn, NY in a hard-to-staff area, and my students come from nearby NYC housing projects. My school is a Title I school with families that are low income. Currently 90% of our students receive free lunch.
I will be teaching first grade collaborative team teaching this upcoming September. Collaborative team teaching is a new concept in education, where the class is made up of 60% regular education students and 40% students with special needs.
In first grade, students are exploring various mathematical concepts. To better prepare my students for these explorations, I would like to provide them with hands-on supplies and manipulative's that will appeal to their various functional levels. Working in a collaborative team-teaching setting, I am faced with a diverse set of learning abilities. The supplies will be used to better meet my students' needs.
I would like to begin the new year with the math supplies needed to ensure my students' success in exploring the new mathematical concepts they will be learning. Their success in first grade will be the foundation for their performance in upcoming years. I have twenty students in my class and would like for each of them to have access to supplies that will enhance and enrich their learning. Many of these supplies will also be used by the students at home. These supplies will increase their chances for success.
