My students need math materials that they can use to explore patterns, relationships with numbers, and build! In order to accomplish this, they need to have Geometric Shapes and linking cubes.
When you were in school did you have worksheets upon worksheets of math to "help" you practice becoming a better mathematician? Did you either "get math" or it was impossible?
For my students, school is an environment in which to be loved, challenged, and accepted for all of their talents and areas of growth.
Growing up in poverty can create challenges on top of their talents and growth in more than just math. These students arrive at school each day, with the need to be accepted and safe. We are a community that values each student and family. My students deserve this community to embrace them and give them equal opportunity for all no matter their background.
My Project
Math is one of the most enriching and engaging challenges school has to offer. My students need opportunities to grapple with problems, find solutions, and be able to create those solutions. With all of the math materials I have chosen, my students will be able to make choices on which materials work best to solve problems and how to create. They will be more engaged in their learning and develop a love for math!
Our first project is on Building Bridges, and students will have the opportunity to create a design for a bridge to go across the Boise River and Canals.
This is an enriching, engaging, and purposeful project with the math materials. With these math materials at their fingertips, they will have multiple tools to help visualize what this could look like to create a bridge that stands and supports weight. The students will have a choice as to what material they think would work best and then build a prototype to present to the community.
Using the geometric shapes, tangrams, linking cubes, and building bricks will also give the students ways to solve math puzzles visually. Research shows that building is an extremely important step in the development of our young engineers and mathematicians to build relationships, patterns, and create solutions. With these new math materials we would be giving our students the tools they need to be successful engineers and mathematicians of the future!
