Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is my first year teaching fourth grade in an urban school district. Within my classroom, each and every one of my students comes from a very low socioeconomic background. We have a high rate of English Language Learners. Our school is 100% free breakfast and lunch.
My students face many challenges, however, I am looking to provide them with an education that leads to success since I strongly believe all students can and will succeed in my classroom.
Despite some of our setbacks, my students are still very eager to learn.
My Project
One area my students struggle the most with is math. Many students dread math because “it’s boring.” So, it should come as no surprise that every time they hear, “It’s time for our math review”, the moans and groans start. That is, until we take our math review to the next level... hospital transformation style!
By transforming my classroom into a hospital setting with medical-like tasks relating to math, it will engage and excite my students.
Items including gowns, face masks, gloves, and safety glasses will make it possible.
My students love when there’s an opportunity to learn in non-traditional ways, so what better way than to just act the part, but also dress the part too?! By donating to this project, it will provide my students the materials to make the transformation feel as real as possible, and hopefully change my students opinions about math being “boring.” Who knows we may have some future doctors in this classroom!
