Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are typical teens and preteens. They love sports and video games. The latest music can be heard playing on their phones before school. Most are from second language learning families. Working class parents come to meetings always eager to see how they can help their children have the best learning opportunities.
They love technology but don't always see how it can be used to help their education.
You see them snapping and chatting. Following each others' tweets and liking different posts. What they are missing is how technology can enhance their learning; both by making it fun and giving them more connections to their learning.
My Project
The drones and graph paper will help students to see geometry in the real world and be able to connect to careers, such as architecture and design. Too many times students use math in a vacuum, such as "Find c, given this right triangle" or "What is the area of the rectangle?"
By connecting their mathematical skills to the real world, they will have a better connection, understanding, and retention of the mathematics.
Graphing their community and calculating measurements, areas, perimeters - these are real life skills that can change their views on mathematics.
After seeing how their own community is laid out, they will create their own small community. Combining what they have observed in the real world and their classroom learning, they will play the role of city planners to create a virtual community.
