Math Discovery

My Students

As a teacher in a diverse area with many ranges of income, it is quite difficult to provide my students with the hands-on learning they need and love. The students are creative and love to use technology. They will work hard on any project that gets them into the learning. They like to get their hands into the actual learning by touching and visualizing the outcome. We have meaningful discussions and even the instructor plays the role of student throughout. We also have a serious shortage of supplies and I am constantly finding myself supplementing for my students that cannot get what they need to be successful.

My Project

Our students have shown signs of struggling to grasp concepts in Geometry. They are able to see the nets on paper but not really grasp the different sections to find dimensions of. They can decompose the figures better when given a real shape to hold on to. They can also visualize where the different shapes are by folding them open and then closed. In the past, my eighth grade students were able to understand and work better with problems involving decomposition of shapes by having the manipulatives to use. These items will be something that we can use now and in the future.
