My students need magnetic coins and ten-frames, math practice and problem-solving journals, and math prompts for practice with computation and problem-solving.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students need so much repetition to learn math, but we don't have many materials to make it fun! Grasping challenging math concepts can be made simpler when students have multiple activities to learn with. My students are struggling to learn math facts, concepts, and problem-solving strategies.
I teach 25 special education students in grades K-5 at an urban elementary school that has a strong, diverse community.
This school has 86% of students on free and reduced lunch, and our students speak more than 10 languages (35% are English Language Learners), which means we need materials that will make learning accessible to everyone.
My Project
My students work with me for part of their day so that they can receive instruction at their individual levels. They are currently struggling to learn math facts and concepts.
My students with disabilities attend an elementary school with limited funds, which makes it difficult to diversify our math materials. Using magnetic coins, ten-frames, and jumbo dice will give them additional practice in a fun way. New math prompts, problem-solving cards, and daily practice and problem-solving journals will help solidify those math concepts that are challenging and explore flexible methods of problem-solving.
I have requested math materials that students can use to feel successful at their individual levels.
They won't have to struggle to keep up or try and figure out what to do. They will be able to practice what we have been working on in exciting ways. We all want to feel successful. These materials will enable my students to learn and practice new math concepts and get the repetition that they need to master those skills.
