My name is Rosemary Boyd and I am a second grade teacher in PS 2X. P.S. 2 is located in a low income area in the South Bronx. Our school is comprised of 91% families receiving free or reduced lunch. The school ranks very low within the region in mathematics. My goal for a successful school year (2004-2005) is to create an environment that will foster great mathematicians. As a second grade teacher I am thinking of creative ways that will engage students in various hands-on activities so that they will be motivated to learn. Many of our second graders did poorly in the math assessment and need to strengthen their skills. By bringing in various activities, the children will become empowered which will eventually mean SUCCESS. One important element the classroom is lacking is various hands on materials. Our school doesn't have a math lab. The children need more than just text books so that learning will be engaging at the same time FUN. Math activity kits in money and measurement will be excellent during group work. Students will be able to successfully meet city and state standards.
