Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from all over San Francisco, but primarily San Francisco's Mission district. A little more than half are of Latinx heritage. Nearly all are low-income students of color, and many are the first generation of their family in this country and will be the first in their family to attend college.
For my students, our school community is like another family.
It's a place they feel safe, and find some refuge from the homelessness, drug abuse, and crime many of them encounter in their neighborhoods. San Francisco's housing crisis increases pressure on their families, as gentrification drives up costs, changes community demographics, and makes it harder and harder to stay in the community.
My Project
I have very large classes (35+), and students will work in collaborative groups at tables for four. The classroom is large, but tables need to be arranged in close proximity to one another on one side of the room so that students can see the whiteboards, projector screen, and walls. A comfortable break-out space, with a nice rug and floor chairs will enable groups to spread out a bit while they're working on math tasks and projects. I expect flexible seating to help improve focus and help students experience more joy doing math. Even big kids like to sit on the floor!
