Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the most amazing group of humans. They are eager and motivated to learn as much as they can get their hands on. The most demanding task I have encountered this year has been finding material that challenges them.
Everyday they surprise me with their intelligence; I have nine students working in the 5th grade math curriculum.
In addition to their intelligence, they surprise me with their eagerness to teach others in the classroom. Their biggest motivation for learning has been the ability to teach others once they're finished.
My Project
Currently, I have two wobbly chairs that I use in my classroom. The students are so good about taking turns with the chairs and even set up their own schedule of who uses it when (they decided for birthdays, you get to use it all day). They use these chairs so well, and move them to other tables to help students with math and writing assignments.
My students need stool that will allow them to move freely around an already crowded classroom, and return to their areas without much disturbance.
They can take their chair to a student that needs help in math, and "Coach" the child in the areas they missed. So often, the phrase, "Who needs a Coach?" is blurted out with the response of hands just shooting in the air. Right now, they use the wobble chairs and really take ownership in learning and pride in teaching, anything I can do to make that easier, I'm going to.
Prior to the introduction of the two wobbly chairs I have, the students would have to ask others to move their chairs or table in order to get to the space they needed. I'm excited to see what adding just 4 more stools would do for the kids.
In addition to the chairs making it easier for them to move around, the clipboards will allow student to find a space other than a table to work. This will allow Coaches to help students in the library area, the hallway, etc.
