If you walk into my classroom you will not see desks. You will see students scattered through out the room. I have flexible seating set up in my classroom and love it. My students work in a math workshop model and enjoy having the ability to do multiple activities each day.
One thing missing from our day to day activities is reading in the math classroom.
Many of our students struggle with reading. Because of this, reading needs to be emphasized in all classrooms. My students love to read, but I do not have a classroom library available for them to access books in my room.
Books are rarely seen in math classrooms. My students see many books in their language arts class, social studies class, and even some in their science class. I want to show them that there are many books that they can read about math that are interesting and full of information.
The Grade 4-5 Math Library that I have chosen are both non-fiction and fiction books.
Students will get to read geometry books, sports math books, books that tie into the Common Core, and many other books. All of the books I have chosen are at or below their reading levels as well so that students will not struggle to read the books I have available. I want reading in my room to be enjoyable and not a task. I hope to get my students interested in the world of math through books.
