Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's time to learn math in a cooperative learning environment! Students must face and persevere in problem-solving, express, organize, and explain their thinking. Students need to speak, read, explain using math vocabulary. We need access to technology and supplies to create meaningful classroom.
My students are bright, hard working, and demonstrate good character qualities.
They are in 8th grade Algebra 1 class, which is the highest math class we offer. They live in a harsh, low socioeconomic area where most of our students qualify for a free meal. English is their second language. Our school serves about 1200 students from the community, 6 to 8th grade. A lot of them have limited technology access and do not have supplies such as graph paper, markers for projects, colored pens or pencils. I would like them to take some online quizzes and practice using the math software that is free for educators but we don't have access to any computers.
My Project
The computers and all of the supplies will be used in the classroom daily. The students will use the computers to practice, take quizzes, and emphasize algebra skills that they are lacking. The markers and the other supplies will motivate the students to participate and learn in a cooperative environment. With white boards I can quickly see, which student struggles with math concepts and I can tutor them on their own white board. The ratio of student to teacher becomes 1 to 1. Students in the groups also help each other out. In a group, a student tutors their own group and all students get to learn and participate daily in the lesson. The three lap tops will be used for group work. I will download the free graphing/solving software Microsoft Mathematics. The groups that are advancing with a concept can check their work using the software and visualize the math concepts. Struggling students will also use them to practice graphing/solving equations, systems, and inequalities.
Students love the idea of being out of their seat and working with others on the whiteboards to learn math.
They start to enjoy my math class, do their best to work hard and learn from me and each other. Students see the passion in me that I want them to be the best they can be and to learn math everyday even when they are going through a tough day at home. I strive to motivate them every single day and I want them to persevere and be successful in school and in life.
