My Students
My students are hands-on, visual learners who come to school ready to learn. After spending a morning in our Title I classroom, you would never guess that roughly 60% of the students are labeled “at risk” and more than 85% are considered “low socioeconomic status”.
My class of young learners is the most diverse group I have ever had the pleasure of teaching.
My classroom of 25 represents four different native languages and four different countries. They are curious and creative with a love of all things hands-on and active. Our students come from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds and strive to reach high standards. These culturally diverse students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and speak different languages.
My classroom provides many first time opportunities for the students including the first time in school, the first time making new friends, and the first time to use technology or hands-on manipulatives.
My Project
The act of solving simple equations regularly, sharpens logical thinking ability and boosts mental agility.
As I continue to grow as an educator I realize the importance of guided math in my classroom.
Guided math is a time during instruction where I get to target specific math skills that students are struggling with. During guided math sessions lessons rely heavily on math manipulatives because first grade students are still at the developmental age where they benefit from a hands on learning environment. The balance classroom kit, number board, and magnetic money that I am requesting will be very helpful to my students.
Number sense, fact fluency, and the ability to see numbers represented in various ways are critical skills that need to be developed in first graders for them to be successful in 2nd - 12th grade math. A donation to this project will be a donation to help a child begin their journey to their future.
