My students need storage containers to organize and maintain supplies for math centers. They also need materials for guided math binders as well as manipulatives for math centers.
My first grade friends walk through my door every day excited about exploring the world around them. For many of my students, school is the one stable place they know. They look forward to the routines of our day, and thrive because of our classroom environment. First grade friends are so excited to get up and move around our room while we are learning. They know our room and school are safe places where they can explore everything learning has to offer.
My Project
My students have diverse needs as learners. They learn best in a small group, differentiated learning environment. In order to provide math instruction at each student's level, guided math needs to be implemented in our classroom. Because this is my first year in this grade level, and my second year as a teacher, I do not have many manipulatives to set up guided math. Items such as Dominoes add engagement to math as students can use them for new ways to create addition and subtraction sentences. They will use the Addition Tower of Math Game to practice fact recall. Power Pens add a new level of engagement by allowing students to practice their facts with immediate auditory feedback. Addition and subtraction flash cards are used to play a game called Garbage, which the kiddos absolutely love! With all of these options, guided math becomes both more engaging and exciting for students.
Students love being able to explore and understand math with their hands, and guided math centers allow them to do just that.
Students can roll double dice to practice addition facts and fact families. They can manipulate tens frame counters to understand addition and place value. Binders, sheet protectors, and dry erase markers will help students utilize map binders, a station in which they complete different math problems using the markers on the sheet protectors, which provide a dry erase surface. With a tray to store the binders, students will have easy access and a set location where the binders will stay.
Structure and organization allow guided math and math centers to run smoothly. It helps teach students about responsibility, being responsible for their learning, and being responsible for the materials.
