Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher for Joseph E. Gary Elementary School. I instruct students in grades 6-8 in mathematics. According to page one of the 2004 Illinois school report card for Gary Elementary the demographic makeup of my school is 99.6% Latino. Thus, many of the pupils are English language learners. Alas, because of this fact the majority of students are scoring under par according to the individual grade level. According to page six of my school's annual report card the average math score of the eighth grade students taking the ISAT was 27.9% out of a possible 100%. Most of the students in my classroom, cannot grasp basic mathematical concepts. It is reported on page 19 of the Gary Elementary report card that my school is not making the yearly adequate progress mark for reading or for math. If I am going to release students that will be successful in middle grade math then I will need as much assistance as possible.
At Gary Elementary 66.7% of male students are strengthening their math skills while 1.9% of male students are transitioning their math skills into the next grade level. Equally sad, 75.4% female students are strengthening their math skills while only 1.6% of female students are transitioning their skills to the next grade level. The math center will provide students with flash cards that deal with the basic math concepts of subtraction, addition, multiplication, and fractions. In addition the math center will be stocked with board games dealing with the concepts of fractions and equivalency that will not only provide a great and fun environment to learn but also everyday understanding of the facts of mathematics. Also, the math center will be filled with pattern blocks and geometric shapes that will further students understanding of geometry. All the supplies placed in the math center will greatly supplement my curriculum and aid the students in understanding and using basic key concepts of math that have been misunderstood for some time now.
With your assistance I will succeed in educating students with the math skills necessary to succeed at the next grade level and beyond.
