My students are a diverse group of learners each with their own favorite part of school. I teach at a Title 1 school in a low-income community with limited resources, but my students bring excitement to the class that drives the day. My students love sitting on pillows in our classroom library when they read. They love drawing, so currently we are making sketchbooks that we will send to an art library in Brooklyn. They also love playing math games on the computer that are both engaging, and rigorous.
The library and the sketchbooks were funded by myself, but I need help for the computers.
My Project
Some of my students would tell you that they like Math, but even the ones that dislike math would tell you that they love using our computers to play math games online. They would also tell you that they really do not like using our old laptops. They freeze up, and sometimes the cord becomes accidentally disconnected and the student watches their screen instantly go black. Not only did they lose their work, but now they have to wait for the computer to reboot. Not so with new Chrome books! We received five this year and my students LOVE them. We are able to go on several different sites to practice our math skills that keep us engaged and motivated.
I am so surprised that we are months into the year and they are still just as motivated to continue leveling up and learning new skills.
We use programs that allow me as the teacher to specifically assign skills to individual students. This makes it possible for even my most struggling students to succeed and learn. The adaptability also makes it possible for me to push and challenge my most gifted students to achieve even more.
Math is certainly not the only subject that would benefit from Chrome books. We research and discover our world online in History and Science. We learn how to find answers and plan experiments online. We even have access to books online that we do not have in our classroom. The five Chrome books we have are so appreciated, but my class of 22 would be able to do so much more with even a couple more.
