My classroom is located in Washington state at a Title I school. Students at my school are hardworking, kind, eager individuals. Many students are first- and second-generation citizens from Africa, South America, and Asia. About forty-two percent of students qualify for English Language Learner services, but up to fifty percent of students speak a language other than English in the home. Our differing cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, and languages provide richness in the classroom, but we also face challenges. One challenge is that we are incredibly underfunded. At our school, eighty-three percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches.
There are so many experiences and learning opportunities I wish I could have with our students if only I had the means.
A math teacher is someone who inspires their students to become problem solvers and critical thinkers. Currently, many of my 60 students and the 675 others at my school are struggling to learn math. This can be attributed to us, the teachers, rather than the students. Math is my passion and as a lead math teacher at my school, I would love to spearhead professional development to help myself and other teachers grow in their practice.
With your help, I could get the professional development books into my school that would be so critical to helping myself and other teachers become better.
Students deserve qualified and educated teachers.
If we have better teachers we will see our students scores rise but even more importantly their understanding of math increase. Books I'm asking for include Teaching Mathematics through Reading, Object Lessons: Teaching Math through the Visual Arts, The Number Sense: How the Mind Creates Mathematics and other great titles. Please help make better teachers so that students get a better and more engaging education.
